Florida Fire Ants

Florida Fire Ants
Common Florida fire ants, Solenopsis, were introduced to the United States through the port of Mobile, Alabama in the 1930's.
Florida fire ants are native to South America. Without a natural enemy, Florida fire ants have rapidly spread across the United States. Only seventy-five years after their introduction, Florida fire ants are more abundant per acre in Florida than in their native South America. The species continues to spread to areas with suitable food sources, a mild climate, and adequate moisture. Their aggressive behavior and painful sting poses a threat to both humans and wildlife, making them a major public nuisance.
There are two species of Florida fire ants that are commonly encountered:
- Red imported fire ant (Solenopsis Invicta)
- Native Fire Ant Solenopsis Geminata
Identification
Florida fire ants are between 0.1 and 0.2 inches in length. They have red/orange colored heads and dark abdomens. Florida fire ants' antennae have ten segments and end in a two segment club. Within a colony, it is normal for the workers to vary in size. Workers have a clearly visible stingers at the tip of their abdomen.
The most common ways to identify Florida fire ants are by their characteristic nests and aggressive behavior. When disturbed, Florida fire ants will swarm quickly to attack any potential threat. The sting of Florida fire ants causes an immediate burning sensation. Within one day a pus filled blister will appear at the spot of the sting.

Where They Are Commonly Found
Florida fire ants prefer land that is open and exposed to the sun. They live in colonies composed of numerous dome-shaped mounds measuring between ten and 24 inches long and six to eight inches high. The number of Florida fire ants in a colony can surpass 250,000! Other places Florida fire ants nest include the inside of walls, under concrete slabs and in cracks and under sidewalks.
During hot weather, Florida fire ants will move deep into the soil to find cooler temperatures and water. Many homeowners stumble upon these mounds, and mistake this temporary migration for an inactive or abandoned nest. However, once the ground becomes moist and cool, Florida fire ants quickly resurface.
