Miami Termites

Miami termites, like most humans, are attracted to South Florida for its climate. Frequent rainstorms coupled with warm temperatures create an ideal environment in which these pests thrive. Miami termites are capable of swarming, or expanding and building new nests, year round. One out of every six homes will be infested, meaning that South Florida's battle with termites persists 365 days a year!

Miami Termites can be classified into two groups:
Florida Subterranean Termites and Florida Formosan Termites, the two most frequently encountered termites, also happen to be the most destructive. Their colonies can grow as large as 300 feet in length and contain as many as 8 million inhabitants. These breeds typically construct their colonies in soil and near a food source. They soon expand, building additional colonies and reproducing at an exponential rate. Miami termites flourish in warm and wet environments.

Florida Drywood Termites and Florida Dampwood Termites do not require a connection with soil making them especially difficult to detect and eradicate. The most common method of identifying an infestation is by the discovery of fecal pellets. However, these are often mistaken for sawdust and usually go unnoticed by the average homeowner.

Miami termites are determined to assault more than just your home; they are prone to target trees, fences, asphalt driveways, furniture, picture frames and even boats!

Tips to Prevent Miami Termites
Homeowners in South Florida are advised to take additional precautions against Miami termites. Eliminate any excess moisture from in and around your home. Inspect your home for weak spots or cracks. Get rid of loose portions of wood from the proximity of your residence. Do not mistakenly presume that airborne insects in your home are mosquitoes, as these could be 'alates' looking to establish a new colony.

Miami Termites are not the only pests that want to invade your home. Other insects, such as Miami Carpenter Ants, will locate abandoned termite colonies and pickup where the Miami termites left off. This is why it is vital to call Suncoast pest control and have them professionally inspect and evaluate your home.
